Co-editor of ZAM magazine Bart Luirink sits down with Maia Matches to discuss the development of South African visual art during apartheid.

Drawing the Change is a livestream event of a conversation that took place at the ZAM headquarters in Amsterdam on January 28th, 2022. It was held in anticipation of the annual Mandela lecture - #ImagineMandela - hosted at the International Theater of Amsterdam on February 6th, 2022.

Archival footage of the conference stage at de Balie in Amsterdam and a segment of the interview with Dollar Brand / Abdullah Ibrahim (filmed in Gaborone), are courtesy of International Institute for Social History (IISH).

Research for Maia's graphic novel about South African artists Thami Mnyele and her grandfather Bill Hart is supported by a starters grant from the Creative Industry Fund NL.  Drawings © Maia Matches.
